A Little History and Some Interesting Facts
Originally a small town called ("Nashaway,” the name of the local tribe), then Factory Village, then Clintonville and finally Clinton. Clinton, located in Worcester County was settled in 1654, and then incorporated in 1850. Clinton, one was a part of Lancaster, separated because of different economies and cultures; Clinton being a mill town was more - blue collar and factory orientated, while Lancaster was more aristocratic and farm/land orientated. In fact through the mills, the town saw a rise in industry, that's when the railroads came to town.
These railroads brought new business including the Bigelow brothers, Erastus and Horatio. The brothers brought a new industry to town and helped establish Clinton during the Industrial Revolution. Erastus was an inventive genius who is credited with the invention of a manufacturing power loom which was used for the production of carpets. With Erastus working as the more technical guy, and Horatio working the business side of the business, soon the brothers made a name for themselves, with the opening of the Lancaster Quilt Company, and the Bigelow Carpet Company. The brothers created such a market that the people no longer needed support from Lancaster so the town of Clinton was formed.
The town was named Clinton after the DeWitt Clinton Hotel located in Albany NY. The late great DeWitt Clinton (former U.S. Senator and Mayor of NY) was responsible for the water way between Lake Erie and Rochester, NY which created a phenomenal commerce. By 1885 Clinton was home to the largest carpet maker in the world.
